Best Golf Courses in Marbella & Puerto Banus
There aren’t too many places in the world where such a high number of top-quality golf courses can be found within easy distance of one another as the Costa del Sol in southern Spain. And at the heart of the ‘Costa del Golf’, as it’s known, are Marbella and Puerto Banus.
From easy, affordable rounds for a fun day out to more testing championship courses for the serious golfer, here then are a handful of the best Marbella golf courses within 20 minutes’ drive (or fewer) from Hotel PYR…
Los Naranjos Golf Club - Distance from the hotel: 8 minutes
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr and opened back in 1977, Los Naranjos is one of the better known golf courses in Marbella’s ‘Golf Valley’. Counted amongst the 100 best golf courses in the world by Top100golfcourses.co.uk, it’s benefitted enormously from recent investment that saw a recent facelift to the clubhouse and facilities.
In terms of what to expect from a round, at 6,500m the course is long with plenty of raised greens, ringed by tricky bunkers and the occasional water feature. Fairways are broad on the front nine (and a little tighter coming back) and are undulating and beautifully kept throughout, making it a fair challenge for a range of abilities.
La Quinta Golf & Country Club - Distance from the hotel: 10-12 minutes
One of the grandest of luxury Marbella golf resorts, La Quinta was designed by three times World Championship winning Manuel Pinero in 1989. With three interconnecting nine-hole courses – San Pedro, Ronda and Guadaiza – it’s a good option for a couple of days’ golf. As a championship course (having in the past hosted the PGA tournament, and regularly hosting the Marbella Amateur Open, Promotur and Horizonte tournaments), many holes on Ronda and San Pedro, particularly, can be quite challenging and proof of handicap is a requirement to play.
In addition to the 27 holes, La Quinta also has an academy for anyone planning to spend a few hours honing their swing on their next golf holiday, while the restaurants and facilities are excellent and the spa is a great place to unwind in after a round or two.
El Paraiso Country Club - Distance from the hotel: 15 minutes
El Paraiso has been around since the early 70s, when they lured South African legend Gary Player over to design a championship course. Since then this attractive parkland course has attracted golfers of all abilities with its broad fairways and good, true greens. Standout holes include the long par-four ninth and the final hole, both of which combine challenging approach shots with spectacular views.
Santa Clara Golf - Distance from the hotel: 15 minutes
Designed by Enrique Canales Busquets in 2001, Santa Clara is another of the more exclusive golf courses near Marbella. While approaches to the greens can often be challenging, fairways are generally wide and well-kept and there’s not a huge amount in the way of rough, either, making it an excellent choice for mid to high-handicappers as well as more proficient golfers. The highlight of a round is undoubtedly the marquee trio of holes known as the ‘Santa Clara Corner’ at 12, 13 and 14, a tricky series of par 3, 4 and 5.
Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club - Distance from the hotel: 19 minutes
Los Arqueros was designed by the late, great Seve Ballesteros, and offers a suitably challenging day of golf. Accuracy is paramount as fairways can be punishingly tight at times, and many holes are laid out on tricky inclines. It’s far from simply one for would-be pros, however: the restaurant is excellent and, dotted with a trio of lakes and offering stunning views up to the peaks of the Sierra de Ronda and down to the beaches on the coast from many of the tees and fairways, it’s as attractive a round of golf as you’re likely to find in this part of Spain.
Santa Maria Golf & Country Club - Distance from the hotel: 20 minutes
Santa Maria Golf Course winds its way attractively through valleys lined with pine and cork oak trees in the hills to the east of Marbella. How it plays can depend to a fair degree on which tee you choose (yellow plays shorter, blue a fair bit longer), while there are a number of interesting water hazards to navigate your way around. After a tight front nine, you’re rewarded by a more straightforward back nine – followed, of course, by a cooling drink in the attractive 18th-century cortijo clubhouse.
